Making your workout work

Working out can be as simple as popping in a DVD and grabbing two tubs of Skippy. (see photo below) A coworker of mine actually sent me this picture yesterday. She didn't have any weights at home and the 10 oz. cans of SpaghettiOs just weren't cutting it. (Plus, she ate them for lunch!) I think Jillian would approve of 3 lbs of peanut butter -- as long as you didn't dip into the jar post-workout!

What McGyver moves do you use when working out?

Meet Moxie

My cube-mate and confidante:

Moxie. She takes me anywhere I need to go. And, best of all, she brings me coffee.
So she's a bit shaky, but I won't cry over spilt coffee ... well ... unless it all spills, then there might be some misting.

So how do you get to work? Are you close enough that you could walk, bike or hop to work? I can burn a few hundred calories, beat traffic AND still get my morning cup of coffee. Wouldn't you rather a calorie-burning commute?

Fitness & friends

The buddy system. It’s as old as time, or just a little bit younger. There was Adam and Eve, Tom and Jerry, Thelma and Louise, Laverne and Shirley, Lewis and Clark. You hold hands crossing the street and workout together, right?

No, according to a new study in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. The study shows people tend to workout harder when they go it alone. But they also workout for a longer period of time when they’re with someone else. So I guess it all depends on what your goal is. If you want the biggest bang for your buck, ditch the friend. But if you’ve got the time and want to gab and grunt, make a play date.

Personally, I like to workout alone, but sometimes it’s fun to mix things up a bit.

What about you? Do you like to sweat with your sweetie or do you burn better without a buddy?

Workout for your mind

Thursday, January 14, 2010 by kate

You know all too well that working out is good for your body. But did you know it’s also good for your brain? A recent study of 33 people with an average age of 70 showed those who exercised 4 days a week for 6 months had cognitive functions improve. What does that mean exactly? They were better at multitasking, processing information and selective attention. (And the changes were greater in women than in men.)

A larger study showed moderate exercise in midlife showed a 39% reduction in the odds of developing mild cognitive impairment. (So, hopefully you won't do stupid things like buy fancy sports cars when you turn 50 ...)

Researchers don’t know exactly why this is true, but they think it’s because of better blood flow to the brain. I think it’s because you’ve got nothing to do but think while you’re working out. I don't have the energy to do anything else!
