Alcohol May Curb Weight Gain

I love it when my vices magically turn into virtues. Peanut butter? That’s a ‘good’ fat. Chocolate? Load up on those antioxidants. Coffee? It’s the new superfood. Chips? Ok. Maybe some things are just bad for you.

But a new study just might be my new favorite. It says women who drink moderate amounts of alcohol don't gain as much weight in midlife as those who abstain.
I’m sure they’re probably not talking about mudslides and margaritas (both of which have about 500 calories a serving … and who has just one serving??).

Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston examined data from 19,220 women and found women who drank 15 to 30 grams a day -- the equivalent of a drink or two -- were 30% less likely to be overweight or obese at the end of the study than those who didn’t drink. And the most effective beverage for curbing weight gain was red wine – my favorite!

But don’t let this information go to your head – researchers warn against turning to an alcohol diet. Though I do think it would pair well with that cookie diet everyone talks about.

Looking for love with love handles

Imagine waking up from holiday hibernation only to find you no longer fit into your skinny jeans. As you lumber over to the computer you realize you’ve also been kicked off a dating site because those sticky buns have stuck to your buns.

This happened to 5,000 people last week. Talk about a slap in the face of self esteem. International dating site BeautifulPeople.com recently kicked 5,000 former members off its site for gaining a little holiday weight. Apparently those who had ''let themselves go'' during the holidays had to be let go.
''Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded,'' said Robert Hintze, founder of BeautifulPeople.com.

“The U.S.A. has been grossly over-indulging since Thanksgiving. It's no wonder that so many members have been expelled from the network. We hope they will be back after shedding the festive pounds." Greg Hodge, managing director of BeautifulPeople.com, said in a statement. "We responded to complaints by moving the newly chubby members back to the rating stage. This is the same as having them re-apply,"

Finding a beautiful date can’t be all that hard, but what will these members do when their significant other gets a little less attractive? We’ve all been there – a comfortable relationship = Saturday nights on the couch in comfy pants eating Chinese food. A recent study in the NY Times showed women gain 11-20 lbs after 10 years with a significant other.

So what do you think? Does the site have the right to shed the dead weight? Or does the whole concept of a dating site for beautiful people show how ugly people can be on the inside?

Conniving ice cream

A new study shows some fats sabotage our brains and make us eat more, according to the LA Times.

Palmitic acid -- a saturated fat found in butter, cheese, ice cream, milk and beef – is one of the wiliest fats to do this. It tricks the body into ignoring hormones (leptin and insulin) that normally tell us when we’re full, so we keep eating. And the effects could last for up to 3 days. So indulging in some ice cream one day could cause you to overeat for several days.

They're totally plotting to make you fat. You can see it in their eyes.

“Our findings suggest that when you eat something high in fat, your brain gets 'hit' with the fatty acids, and you become resistant to insulin and leptin. Since you're not being told by the brain to stop eating, you overeat,” said Dr. Deborah Clegg, lead author of the study, which is published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Yea. I don't think this will stop me from enjoying my oreo cookie ice cream, but maybe I'll be more aware about the sneak attack that's going on inside there.
What do you think? Have you noticed this happening to you at all?
